What is metabolism? Simply explained, metabolism is a collection of chemical reactions in the body that convert the food we eat into the energy needed to power everything we do and the thousands of processes that continually occur in the body. Metabolism is a vital process of life. If our metabolism slows down significantly, we feel tired and lethargic; we feel the cold excessively, we gain weight, our digestive systems slow down, often resulting inconstipation and our immune function and mental capacity are reduced.

 

Insufficient food intake and a very low calorie diet will slow your metabolism resulting in less and less weight loss over time because your body is trying to conserve fat. Although this mechanism is useful in times of famine, it is not useful to anyone trying to lose weight. Starving yourself will also cause loss of muscle – and muscle is a metabolically active tissue. Remember – muscle increases fat burning – the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn.

 

So, in order to be successful with weight loss you have to keep your metabolism high. This can be achieved by eating a healthy diet that provides sufficient calories (but not too many) and eating adequate protein and a small amount of good quality fats. Eating regularly is important, having 3 smaller meals and 2 snacks a day – this will burn calories and stabilize blood sugar levels.

 

Also, having a regular exercise program that includes cardio and resistance training stimulates metabolism and increases muscle mass, which further increases metabolism.
