Appropriate bedding for horses is very important as it has a direct impact on the comfort and health of the horse. In Australia the main choices for bedding have been either straw or shavings but now there is a revolutionary new bedding product available. After reading comments within our forum we were intrigued, Eco Animal Bedding was mentioned as been a great bedding  for horses.

Eco Animal Bedding is corrugated cardboard and came with a list of benefits but like anything new, you never know until you try! So that is exactly what we did here…

Tired of ‘dust’ from dust free shavings, the lack of absorption, the hefty price tag now attached to a truck load and in due course, shavings tend to leave a lot of residual dust which, if inhaled, can be harmful for the horses. In some cases, sawdust is used as a substitute for wood shavings, but it also creates a dusty environment, which can consequently irritate the lungs.

Straw the oldest known form of bedding was out of the question for a number of reasons; the ponies are more inclined to eat all night, some horses can be affected by dusty straw and this can, in certain cases, lead to respiratory problems and allergies, lack of absorption and the biggest pain getting rid of used straw.

So basically the choice for stable bedding that has the ticks in all the right boxes was up till now limited. Getting the right type of bedding is very crucial in ensuring that the horse remains injury-free and healthy.

The main reasons for stable bedding:

Provide warmth and comfort to the horse

Prevent the horse from slipping

Lessen the concussion from hard floors

Good bedding encourages the horse to lie down

Absorb  the horses urine

So clearing out the stable of the worse bed wetter here [one of those that must cross her legs all day waiting to relieve herself once in her stable] we ordered some ECO Bedding. Our stables are 12 x14’ and the advice was 4-5 bags should do the job [however 3 bags in and it was a pretty good coverage and depth to the bed] Eco bedding comes in 20kg bag so manageability was easy and no DUST! when emptying out the bags and laying down the bed was easy as the Eco bedding is so light.
