"The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home 'Tis summer, the people are gay;"
Says the state song of Kentucky.
Maybe not quite summer yet, but the sun shines strong with the arrival of the World Equestrian Games to Lexington, Kentucky.

For the horse lover, it is truly a smorgasboard of choice. First medal of the Games went to the host team,  USA, in the reining. Reining has only been a recognised sport for the last three WEG's and the USA can rightfully claim to be the best there is, claiming all gold medals to be handed out. Second went to the team from Belgium with Italy in 3rd place. Top scoring rider was Shawn Flarida for the US. Flarida is the first reiner to win $3 million and is closing in on $4 million in earnings. There was a lot of interest in 13 time Dressage Champion Anky van Grunsven who scored a creditable 14th place on the first day.  "I feel I'm not ready for this," she said referring to the  competition. "I know I'm not the best here. But it's exciting. ... I love it."

The WEG covers 8 sports -  dressage, driving, endurance, eventing, jumping, para dressage, reining and vaulting. Over the coming days, Eques will bring you photos from Eclipse Sportswire.

The closest you can be to the the action without getting on a plane.

Let the games begin!
