The Police Mounted Section are constantly searching local markets for potential police horse recruits to fill their ranks. With the increased demand for mounted patrols state-wide, there is a constant need to keep the section’s horse ranks fully stocked.

Mounted policing needs a special horse with a temperament that is able to undertake the many Frontline tasks both the horse and rider are faced with in their day to day operations. The section favours draught cross horses which include Clydesdale, Percheron and Friesian crossed horses. Their size, strength and workman like attitudes makes the horse ideal for the rigours of Frontline policing.

Having exhausted the WA market, Mounted Police Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Glen Potter looked nationally for potential recruits. This resulted in the purchase of four potential police horses from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales.

Recruit Police Horse Nero, a Friesian Cross Gelding, is the eldest who at 11, has a previous career as a Movie Horse. Police Horse Elvis and Police Horse Syd, who are both 6 year old Clydesdale Cross Geldings, and Police Horse Rayne, a 7 year old Clydesdale Cross Mare, will now commence their transitional training from civilian life to Police Horse.

Senior Sergeant Glen Potter said “This training will include exposure to the city streets, including Northbridge at night, with many hours gently building their confidence to tackle all aspects of policing. All are expected to be on the beat within the next few months.”
