This month we take a tour around some Australian studs to see what is on the agenda.... from miniature horses to warmbloods. We start of with some of the larger equines  ...but cruise through the pages as we take a look at some wonderful breds available here in Australia and overseas.

Stallions: German frozen semen specialists

We use the best frozen semen stallions we can access over Warmblood mares in attempt to produce the best fillies we can.  Our aim is to have a herd of five premier mares producing dressage progeny the equivalent of the best you can buy in Germany.

Our family began breeding Warmbloods in the early 1970’s.  After a long break we returned to the project with renewed vigour in the late 1990’s, the advent of frozen semen opened the door to a whole new world of improvement.  We could now use a selection of the best tested and performed stallions in the world to start to make some progress toward producing quality progeny.

The next step in the project is to improve the mare herd from which we are working.  The inheritance of such traits as gait and trainability is very high.  We found that it took at least three generations to breed the thoroughbred out of our foundation mares.  We are now concentrating on using mares who are at last 75% Warmblood as a means to more reliably produce quality progeny.  To this end we are not only using locally-bred mares but have imported a Furst Heinrich mare and a Sunny Boy filly to strengthen the foundation of our mare herd.

It is critical that the foals we produce show superior aptitude as sport-horses.  Their temperament and trainability are crucial selection criteria.  The foals are expected to be tractable with a minimum of handling.  It is also important they have pleasant conformation, three sound paces, and expressive gaits.  It is important our clients have the best possible riding experience with their chosen horse and the genetic basis and early handling go a long way to ensuring a good rider-horse relationship.

Each year we return to Germany to maintain our valued contacts and keep abreast of current breeding trends.  We feel it is critical to have actually seen the stallions we are contemplating using as the videos and other publicity materials often fail to show the “warts-and-all” view of a horse.  We travel extensively through northern Germany looking at the horses they are breeding and making the occasional purchase.

We only use imported frozen semen on our mares as the performance testing of Australian-based stallions is incomplete at best.  Much of the semen we import ourselves, direct from the stallion stations.  We also import semen from Hengststation Meyer and a couple of other stallions for sale to mare owners in Australia.

This year we are expecting foals by Londonderry, Sandro Hit, His Highness and De Niro.  We sell all colts as weanlings and keep most or all of the fillies.  We invite anyone who wishes to visit to contact us as we are always happy to take time to show people where we think Warmblood breeding in Australia can go.

Stallions: Budweiser (IMP) - Renegade Z (IMP) - Don Duchovny (IMP)

“Here at Apen Park we strive to import quality, licensed stallions for Australian breeders. We use these stallions and imported frozen semen to breed with our select few quality mares to produce international quality foals for the Australian market. In the near future we aim to start importing some broodmares from Europe so that we can further improve the quality of the stock that we offer for sale”

So far we have had a share in bringing to Australian breeders three different stallions.

-The first stallion was Budweiser (Burggraaf x Voltaire x Ahorn Z) who stands 173cm tall and is approved by the Oldenburg Verband. In his approvals at Pruessendorf 100 day test he scored 126.2 for jumping and came third overall. “Bud” has a performance pedigree that everyone wants with 6 of the top European stallions in a row; Burggraaf, Voltaire, Ahorn Z (v. Alme Z), Landgraf I and Roman. Sire Burggraaf and dam sire Voltaire are the two most popular stallions for showjumping breeding in the Netherlands. (See website for further pedigree information). Bud has over 30 premium rated foals from his first few foal crops in the US. All have been good types with excellent movement and he also has two licensed sons.

-The second stallion to be imported was Renegade Z (Ramiro Z x Quidam de Reval x Cor de la Bryere) who stands 169cm tall and is approved by the Oldenburg Verband. “Gonzo” successfully passed his 30 day test in Neustadt-Dosse, achieving the highest score in showjumping. Gonzo is a top class showjumper with amazing ability and technique over fences. He has won several Class A and L competitions in Germany.

“Gonzo” can also boast and impressive line-up of European ancestors. His sire Ramiro Z was successfully jumped in international shows by Fritz Ligges and is one of the status symbols of European showjumping breeding. His dam Quita Z, was sired by Quidam de Reval. This anglo-norman sire (by Jalisco B v Alme Z) is the most successful international sire known. Quidam de Reval represented his home country France at the Olympic Games and won several Grand Prix under the Danish rider Thomas Velin. (See website for further pedigree information).

-The third stallion to be imported is Don Duchovny (Don Frederico x Goldstern x Prinz Gaylord) who stands 168cm tall and is licensed by the Rheinland Verband. “Donny” is expected to arrive in Australia in early August.

Donny has significant Hanoverian influence in his pedigree being by Don Frederico who was the reserve champion of the 1999 stallion performance test in Adelheidsdorf and a clear winner in the ride-ability section. Don Frederico has quickly proven himself as a sire with 11 licensed sons including the impressive Don Ricoss (a 30 day test winner of ride-ability), 34 state premium mares and 33 auction horses. (See website for further pedigree information).

Donny has three outstanding paces himself and is of an elegant and correct frame that stands out in any crowd. We anticipate that great things will come from this stallion. He really is an outstanding stallion with a big future in dressage ahead of him.

At home at Apen Park we have a number of quality well bred young horses available for sale at all times. Sires include Cairo 869 (IMP/EXP), Junior STV (IMP Frozen), Rhythm & Blues (IMP/EXP) and Ex Libris (IMP) out of well bred mares by Inspiration (IMP/EXP), Valuta (IMP), Cairo 869 (IMP/EXP) and quality Thoroughbred and Anglo Arab mares. “Where attitude matters....”

Situated on a 3400 acre farm on the fertile Darling Downs, Marshanti Performance Arabians strive to produce trainable, beautiful, conformationally correct Arabian derivatives. We strive to combine the most valuable of the purebred Arabians qualities, the beauty, mind and fluid movement to the strength, power and athleticism of the thoroughbred, stockhorse and warmblood bred horses.

Our horses are an extension of our family, we expect them to be well mannered, sociable and a joy to have around.  This is why we aim to match all purchasers of our horses to the most suitable of our horses we occasionally offer for sale.  If we do not have something that suits all of their requirements we can quite often put them in contact with other breeders or trainers with something to ensure that they are satisfied with their purchase. Reasonable prices are always put on our sale horses to allow us to pick the loving home they go to.

In 2006 we will be offering the last of the foals sired by the multi-supreme champion buckskin Arabian stockhorse, Haych Bee Buckstar.  Marshanti Performance Arabians welcome all enquiries regarding our stock for sale and look forward to conversing with other equestrians about our performance bred Arabian derivatives.

This season Marshanti Arabian Performance horses are proud to offer Haych Bee Buckstar progeny for sale. Please view our website for further information and do not  hesitate to contact us via email with any genuine enquiry.
