Hi all, Just wanted to pass on a message I received from a fellow endurance rider in case anyone here rides in the same area - Message below: Hi folks, If you are a rider in the Bunyip State Forest be VERY careful if you see DSE "Leg Capture Device" warning signs regarding trapping of foxes. We came across one today on Junction Track only about 1 foot from the edge of the formed trail. The horses actually stepped on and around the metal anchor plate that was buried just an inch or so under the dirt of the track. These traps are like an old fashioned spring shut rabbit trap but instead of metal jagged teeth they have flat metal jaws that just crush the animals' leg rather than tear it to shreds.. How thoughtful of them.... Anyway, the other traps are probably set very close to the edge of the other trails in the area so stay in the middle and if you get off your horse for some reason DON'T move off the track into the bushes! Barbaric devices and placed in a crazy position.... Take care and please let other riders in the area know. |

That is dreadful, I was going up there today but it is too wet now so I won't be, but thank you very much for this notice. I have passed it along to a number of people. |

I would suggest that your friend contacts the Parks office at Gembrook to let them know what happened. Apparently there is a serious feral dog problem in the park. Dammed if they do, dammed if they don't This topic could also be a warning for riders that take their dogs with them when riding in the park even though they are not allowed |

Surely a cage trap would be better, no-one gets hurt & if they do capture a animal not intended they can set if free again with no harm. Makes me mad to read this stuff. |

I hate traps. We had a cat bought into the vet clinic once that had almost chewed its own leg off to get out of a trap. Bloody awful and what if a person got caught in one?? Don't people walk through there too, I know I used to see hikers in the forest where I used to ride. There must be a better way to eradicate foxes. |

Are you sure they are legal traps? I thought traps in public places was just not legal. |
