Werribee turned on an absolutely beautiful day and horses, riders, spectators enjoyed the warm sun. There were some outstanding young horses competing at this, the first Young Dressage Horse competition in Victoria this season.      This particular competition allows the young horses to see the inside of the indoor arena at Werribee Equestrian Centre in a far less stressful situation than will happen later when they compete in the final.

Horses now need to qualify for the Young Dressage Horse competition at Dressage with the Stars due to the overwhelming popularity of the event.   Saturday's event was run by International Sporthorse Studbook Australia.   ISSA has been formed as a sporthorse rather than warmblood registry and accepts registrations from all acceptable sporthorse breeds.   There is a studbook as well as registry and stringent criteria apply for entry into that studbook, in whichever category the horse is placed.

A Stallion and Colt Assessment was held on the Friday evening.   3 colts and 3 stallions presented for assessment.   Two of the colts were frozen semen offspring.    Bonnie Brae Flemminghton by Flemmingh KWPN out of a mare by Dutchman, and Flowervale Heartbreaker by Heartbreaker KWPN out of a mare by Fechtor both showed very good paces as dressage prospects as well as exceptional ability in their free-jumping.   The third colt, Ashbrook Park Meccano, was by Richmead Medallion (imp.) out of Deveron Antoinette, an Anglo-Arab mare.   He was another outstanding individual showing a lot of quality and exceptional ability.   The older stallions were very nice indeed, but didn't score as high as the colts.    One stallion, by Aachen out of a Better Boy line mare, provided some unexpected entertainment when he decided against going down the jumping lane, stopped, turned, and jumped out over the barricade (which included the dais set up for the dressage judges the next day).     No mean feat!!

Less than 3 points separated the first 3 horses in the 6 year old class - giving an indication of the quality of these horses.    It is interesting to see that the highest percentage of the day went to the 4 year old Coldstream Gaultier, a truly impressive chestnut gelding with an excellent temperament very well ridden by Melissa Davies.   Judges for the first round were Felicity Yuncken and Helen Davies and for the second round Virgina Creed and Deborah McNicol.
